Under the Canada Immigrant Investor scheme a potential migrant must, in addition to owning substantial capital, provide evidence of thorough business knowledge.
Investors must own possessions worth a value of CAD$800,000 or more, and invest CAD$400,000 via the Receiver General for Canada. Such investments are guaranteed by particular province, and must be made on advice from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). The investment will mature 5 years and 3 months from the date it is made, when it will be returned without interest. The money invested will be used to fund job creation and development of the Canadian economy.
The Immigrant Investors Program has, in addition, a points-tested assessment, on the basis of the usual factors – age, education, (business) experience, language ability and adaptability (but not arranged employment), and has a pass mark of 35 out of 100 points.
Investors must have at least two years business experience immediately before making an application to CIC. They must have either:
- controlled and managed a percentage of equity in a qualifying business
- managed at least five full-time job equivalents per year in a qualifying business
The Investors Program is the only business visa for Canada that does not require you to start a business in Canada.
