A new federal pilot project has been launched to speed up the recruitment of temporary foreign workers in Alberta and British Columbia for the following occupations which have been identified as being in high demand:
- carpenters
- crane operators
- dental technicians
- food counter attendants
- food and beverage servers
- hotel and hospitality room attendants
- hotel front desk clerks
- pharmacists
- registered nurses
- retail sales clerks
- snowboard and ski instructors
- tour and travel guides
Human Resources Minister Monte Solberg said that rather than waiting as long as five months for a government labour market opinion about the need to bring in temporary foreign workers, employers will have an answer in five days.
New staff have been hired to process the applications, which is part of a pilot program available only in Alberta and B.C.
In addition, the federal government and the Province of British Columbia are working together on the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will strengthen protections for temporary foreign workers. A similar agreement with Alberta was announced in July.
“If every person - man, woman and child - was working in this province, we still wouldn’t have enough people to fill the need,” said Terry Jorden, spokesperson for Alberta’s Department of Employment, Immigration and Industry. “That’s why employers are going the extra mile to hire foreign workers.”
Demand for foreign workers increased by 400 per cent in Alberta in the past year alone.
Small business groups say they expect more companies to hire from abroad now that some of the red tape has been eliminated.

However, many of our clients have had success in using http://www.workopolis.com This is Canada’s largest job board and contains the employers listings as well as the recruiter’s listings. Make sure to register with them and post your c.v./resume so you are on the system. The next step would be to actually call the employer. If they are interested and wish to hire you then in most cases we would be able to assit with the immigration paperwork.

If your wife receives an offer of employment as a nurse then you can go and apply for an ‘open work permit’ in conjunction with her application. Although there will be no restrictions to who you can work for there might be some provincial regulations to comply with. Best thing to do is to do a google search under regulation of firefighters in the relevant Province.

You are certainly well qualified and in high demand in BC. The fastest way to get into the country is to be offered a job by an employer in BC. In essence it is an employer sponsored visa that will allow you to work on a temporary basis for the duration of the permit. Usually 2 years. It will take about 6 months to put through.
Once you are here you can apply via the Provincial Nominee Program or through the regular federal program which will be expedited.

Choose a PNP program in the Province where you wish to reside. The PNP programs are employer-driven. You will need an offer. The process will dependon the Province. 12 months of it is Alberta or BC. Same in Ontario but the occupation list is not as extensive.
