David Beckham likely to make debut in Toronto, Canada

TORONTO - Watching Becks on the pitch or having a Beck’s on the beach may be an August long weekend dilemma for soccer fans in Toronto this summer.

David Beckham, the one-time England captain who last month signed a $250-million US contract to join the Los Angeles Galaxy, is currently set to make his Major League Soccer debut against Toronto FC on Aug. 5.

The North American Soccer League will see David Beckham of the Los Angeles Galaxy make his debut in Toronto on August 5th. Beckham will be playing against Toronto FC in its new purpose built stadium in downtown Toronto next to Lake Ontario. Tickets are going quickly as soccer fans in North America look to see how the former England Captain plays against Canada’s only professional team in the new league.

Montreal Canadiens majority owner George N. Gillett Jr. has taken a huge step toward expanding his sports empire, today coming to terms for ownership of the English Premier League’s Liverpool F.C. with fellow American sports tycoon Tom Hicks, owner of the NHL’s Dallas Stars, for a total sum estimated at $1 billion Canadian.

We are now seeing more and more ‘internationalization’ and ‘co-branding’ of sports teams across different types of sports in different countries. This is surely the beginning of a much larger phenomenon to come between big league ownership in North America and Europe.
