Research In Motion reported a higher preliminary third-quarter profit last Thursday that beat expectations and forecast an even better fourth quarter due to strong demand for its BlackBerry handheld e-mail devices.

RIM said it earned $176 million (£90 million), or 93 cents a share, for the three months ended 2 December. That was up from a profit of $120 million, or 61 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier.
